A tribute to America’s ‘March King’

Sousa earned a reputation as the "March King" by penning 136 marches, including the much-loved "The Stars and Stripes Forever." He also wrote 15 popular operettas, 11 suites, 70 songs and numerous other works.

Sousa helped develop the Sousaphone, a tuba-like bass brass instrument that wraps around the player's body, with a forward-facing bell for better portability while marching.

Concert bands in Sousa's time had used the similarly portable helicon, a brass bass instrument that Sousa disliked because of its harsh tone. Sousa asked Jimmy Pepper, of J.W. Pepper Co., to design a new, more rich-sounding instrument for his band. Pepper was up to the challenge, and the Sousaphone, a staple of the modern American concert band, was born.

Brown, a doctoral candidate in tuba performance who has taught at the Academy of Music since 2005, will perform one of Sousa's violin solos on an original 1893 Sousaphone, which he acquired on loan from the J.W.

2do on the tens

$10 Are the folks at the drive-through window saying, "See you tomorrow!" after they hand you your order? Might be time for a reality check. Morgan Spurlock -- who wrote, directed, produced and starred in the Academy Award-nominated documentary "SuperSize Me" -- will be at E.J. Thomas Hall (198 Hill St., Akron) at 7:30 p.m. Monday to talk about the physical, financial and legal price we pay for obesity. Admission is $8. Call 330-972-7570 or go to www.ejthomashall.com.

$20 If you ever stood in front of a mirror trying to figure out just how the heck Gene Simmons got his tongue to go out that far, if you ever doodled "Mrs. Paul Stanley" on your school notebook, if your dream is still to rock and roll all night and party every day, the Cleveland KISS Expo (noon Saturday, Holiday Inn, 4181 West 150th St., Cleveland) is for you.

Patina's promise: Stories enrich 'Antiques Roadshow'

A blend of mostly orange hues in a jack-in-the-pulpit style, they belonged to my grandmother's family and were handed down to my father. Somehow they survived the ballgames my brother and I played in our living room while growing up. But when the beautiful vases became mine, I was so sure I would be their downfall that they now reside in a box -- many miles away from klutzy former infielders.

After talking with Marsha Bemko, I can't help wondering what their full story might be.

Bemko is executive producer of TV's Antiques Roadshow, which will make its first stop in Orlando on June 30, opening its doors to collectors who hope to learn more about their keepsakes. Part treasure hunt, part history lesson, the hourlong PBS show features quick-hit appraisals of antiques and collectibles at Roadshow events around the country.

A sweet return to Easton: Carmelcorn Shop reopening

Sia Bassil and her father, Chafiq Melhem, hung metal shelves on the red-and-white striped walls at the Carmelcorn Shop in Easton's Centre Square and stocked them with bags of coffee beans, licorice and cherry lollipops.

Loyal customers such as Diane Dutt, who works at nearby Bixler's Jewelers, peeked and then walked inside the store to witness the renovation work and say the same phrase.
