Film, TV vehicles stars of show

The Chicago Auto Show usually includes a selection of antiques, collectibles and special-interest vehicles. And this year will be no exception.

Among the vehicles expected to be on display is the Super Luxurious Omnidirectional Whatchamajigger (S.L.O.W.) vehicle, which certainly qualifies as "special interest." The fanciful car-boat-airplane was built for the 2003 movie "The Cat in the Hat," starring Mike Myers.

The exhibit of special cars is from the Volo Auto Museum in Volo, Ill.

The display will include the Daytona Spyder that was driven by Don Johnson in the early seasons of the TV show "Miami Vice," and the Herbie Volkswagen Beetle from the 2005 movie "Herbie, Fully Loaded."

Other cars will include the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro that was driven by Paul Walker in the movie "2 Fast 2 Furious," a 1931 Cadillac custom phaeton, 1936 Packard phaeton and four Chevy BelAirs - two 1957s, a '55 and a '56.

Confirming piece of family history

PILESGROVE TWP. She may not appear on television, but for Betsy Harris, her experience with the popular PBS series "Antiques Roadshow" is one she'll long remember.

When the show's producers taped new episodes in Philadelphia last summer, she had the chance to have a Harris family heirloom examined by one of the country's top appraisers of early American furniture.

Most importantly, the experience helped confirm the stories that, like the desk, had been handed down through several generations of the Harris family. Harris and her husband, Grant, are now the owners of the piece.

"It provided validation on the age of the desk," Harris said.

The first of the three "Antiques Roadshow" episodes taped in Philadelphia premieres tonight at 8 p.m.

Lose the posters, give your space a trendy style

Despite tight budgets and landlord limitations, college students in cramped quarters have plenty of interior decorating options.

"Nobody understands how powerful your space is to you, your psyche,"said Beth Minnich, interior designer for Leanne Snyder Interiors. Especially for many college students who, for the first time in their lives, have an apartment they can call theirs. It's a high making your place your own."

To give yourself the opportunity for personal expression you have to get organized.

Focus on horizontal storage ideas such as raising your bed on cinder blocks and using your own shelving above the mini-fridge and microwave. Once you can see your walls they can become your palette.

Hang a tapestry as an alternative to wall painting.
