After three long years of restoration and a price tag reaching NT$300 million (US$92 million), the Sanxia Old Street opened on Tuesday with County Governor Chou Hsi-wei officially declaring the byway open. Two days of ceremonies will follow on February 10 and 11 with everyone welcome to turn out and enjoy the fun.

The County Government's Office of Cities and Towns says that the celebration of the reopening of the Old Street will be held on the 10th and 11th of this month and will be themed "Play this Spring: the Grand Opening of Sanxia Old Street." Traditional arts performances will be on tap, along with games for the kids, and visits to the Tzushi Temple, the Limeishu Memorial Hall and the Sanxia Museum of History await the visitor. For tourists, it's a great opportunity to don antique clothing and visit the Old Street, where one can get a finely crafted pocket with a collectible Sanxia magnet inside.

Day Trip: Plainview, Texas, display honors cattle drive

For a different twist on a cattle drive, head on over to Plainview, Texas, and take a drive through town to view the 48 painted fiberglass cows located at various places.

A community project, the cattle were first placed in the city in 2000. Local artists painted the cows with scenes that depict the city and local area, said Karen Crim, city of Plainview administrative assistant.

Some of the businesses have picked up on it as well and (placed) their logos on them (the cattle), said Crim.

Plainview is also home to Wayland Baptist University, which houses the Abraham Art Gallery. Another nearby attraction is the Museum of the Llano Estacado, which features more than 80 exhibits that depict the development and history of the area.

Other attractions in the area include the Fair Theater and the JC Penney outlet store, said Crim.

Vergennes man preserves history in pictures and print

While traveling to obtain items for his antique business in Vergennes, Jesse Clay Phillips noticed something was starting to disappear from the landscape.Taking his trusty disposable cameras with him during his travels, Phillips started photographing barns he found along the way and has turned the compilation into book form - two books, in fact, reflecting barns in Franklin, Perry and Jackson counties.“I photographed all of the barns in Perry County, some in Franklin County and a few in Jackson County," Phillips said. “Little did I know what I was letting myself in for, and all the things that happened along the way - the setbacks, the frustrations and the rewards were all part of it."

For Insurance, Policies to Live By

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ideally, you never need to file a homeowners insurance claim. But if and when you do, that difficult process will be a lot easier if you avoid some common mistakes people make, said David Siesko, an insurance expert and founder of Siesko Partners, a consultant to companies on insurance issues.

Many homeowners probably stash their policy in a desk drawer without ever reading the whole thing, but that's a mistake. Homeowners should check their policies to make sure they have the coverage they need and that they're getting it at a good value.
