A weekend in the Poconos

You can stop smirking. The place we're talking about has no heart-shaped pools or champagne-glass Jacuzzis. Instead, the Sterling Inn is a country inn surrounded by state parks. Outdoors, there are walking trails that skirt a lake; indoors, there isn't a pink ruffle to be found.

Guest rooms range from traditional guest rooms furnished with country antiques and reproductions, to Victorian suites complete with fireplaces and decks, to cottage suites in wooded areas beyond the main house. Public rooms are furnished with antiques; there are welcoming fireplaces in front of which you can relax with a book. If you're looking to be a little more active, skates, snowshoes and cross country skis are available on the premises (Rates range from $155-$334 per night, including breakfast and dinner for two.

Eagles expected en masse for watch

Sochowski said while this weekend's watch is at capacity, potential eagle watchers will have other opportunities Jan. 27 and Feb. 10.

Statistics released by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources counted a population of more than 400 pairs of nesting bald eagle couples. That growth trend continues today, said Glenn Terres, an eagle biologist for DNR.

"In Maryland in 1977, we had about 41 nesting pairs," he said. "At the time of the last full survey in 2004, we had over 400, so we've increased about 10-fold."

A December bird count by the Tri-County Bird Club found about 50 eagles, which is more than in recent memory, said club leader Sam Dyke.

"It's not hard to see eagles now, especially around the Nanticoke River," he said. "They're doing well."

Terres said many factors have contributed to the eagles' comeback over the years, including the disappearance of pesticides such as DDT, which affected the birds' diet and made their eggs weak and vulnerable.

Antique and Vintage Hardware Auctions at AntiquesYes.com

The first 2007 AntiquesYes.com auction opens for bidding on January 27th and features antique builder's hardware. But rather than the normal format of selling 100 lots, each with one, or perhaps a few pieces, there will only be 10 lots, with every lot containing multiple pieces, and in some cases as many as 50 items being sold for a single high bid.

[ClickPress, Tue Jan 16 2007] AntiquesYes.com will take Internet antiques auctions to a new level in 2007 by presenting a number of first ever events and by introducing a new and innovative online auction lot concept.

AntiquesYes.com is already known as the premier site for producing highly specialized and focused events for buyers and sellers of antique hardware, antique tiles, and Scalamandre artifacts.

Meneghini Antique Refrigerators

Although they may have an antique appearance, there is nothing old fashioned about the Meneghini refrigerators. The fridges are produced by Robeys out of materials that range from aged cherry wood to Lebanese cedar and mahogany, with solid brass handles that are sturdy and timelessly beautiful. On top of the stunning finishes, or rather within them, lie ultra-modern interiors, with natural lighting, glass shelves and even appliances (optional), including coffee makers, microwaves, ice makers and even ovens. Appliancist has some apparently exclusive photos of one of the newer models. We don't have an exact price on these units, especially since there is a lot of customization involved, but don't be surprised to see them at upwards of £20,000.

Catch the Acorn Antiques roadshow

Acorn Antiques was first seen on BBC Television 21 years ago and has been a firm favourite with the nation ever since. Catch the stage musical version in Preston from March 26 to 31.

The show follows Miss Babs' struggle to keep her antiques business open, as shop after shop in the High Street is forced out by faceless chains.

Can she afford to turn down the offer from The Guilty Bean, the world's second biggest chain of coffee shops> If they do update the shop, can they still afford to employ Mrs Overall?

Will Mr Clifford ever get his memory back, and remember to whom he's engaged?

And most worryingly, will Mrs Overall be able to tap dance while holding the tray?

This is a triumphant return to the stage for this new production following last year's 16-week sold-out run at London's Theatre Royal Haymarket.
