Magazine Ideas: Ramp up the romance

If you've chosen a special something for a special someone for that special day in February, be sure to wrap it in a special package. The February issue of Country Home has some ideas:

_Head for the thrift store to find a 45 record that suits your sentiments, anything from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles to "Go All the Way" by the Raspberries. Tape a photograph on the back of the record so it shows through the spindle hole. Tie this musical picture frame to the top of your gift.

_Tie an antique key on the gift with velvet ribbon. It not only looks neat but also carries a message - something about unlocking your heart.

_Repackage store-bought or homemade truffles and other candy in old film canisters. Glue interesting antique drawer knobs to the top for an added flourish.

Final Harry Potter book due July 21

LONDON (AP) -- J.K. Rowling marked the spot where she finished the final "Harry Potter" book. "J.K. Rowling finished writing `Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows' in this room on 11 Jan 2007," read the message on an antique-style statue at Edinburgh's five-star Balmoral Hotel.

The writer announced on Thursday that the seventh and final installment in the series, which tells the story of Harry during his final year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, will be published July 21.

"I can confirm she did write some of the book at the Balmoral last month and did complete the book at that hotel," the author's spokeswoman, Nicky Stonehill, said.

The hotel said it does not encourage guests to write on hotel property, but Rowling is a special case.

"Obviously this is quite a unique case," hotel spokeswoman Jessica Trotter said.

Rare Collection of Antique Maps Unveiled at Northwestern ...

Established in 1954, the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University in Chicago is said to have the largest collection of African art, history and literature in the world. Recently, it unveiled a collection of antique African maps created as far back as the 15th century.

David Easterbrook, the curator of the library, says that the early cartographers who created these maps based their data mainly on anecdotal information from travelers. They also used the limited literature of European scholars, and antiquities of Greek and Roman scholars who had written of, or traveled to, Africa.

“They were taking text and turning it into something visual," he said.

Easterbrook adds that the maps cover in particular North Africa and Algeria, Madagascar and other islands, and a few city plans.
