Kapono vs. Jones shootout in Vegas

CLEVELAND - One is a bombastic, self-promoting, slick-dressing Texan. The other is a laid back, self-deprecating, rarely clean shaven Southern Californian.

Damon Jones proclaims he's ``the world's greatest shooter;'' Jason Kapono says he thinks fans ``mistake me for a ballboy.''

Both, however, are indeed among the best in the NBA at shooting the 3-pointer, and it's led their careers to intersect. It happened Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena and will happen again in a week at the Three-Point Shootout during All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas. That's only the half of it.

``I'm going to win, there's no doubt about it,'' Jones said of the contest. ``Everyone else is playing for second, third, fourth and fifth.''

``I think Damon will probably win it.

Thieves Hit Dallas Rug Store

DALLAS -- Thieves hit an Oriental rug store in Dallas over the weekend, carting off merchandise worth tens of thousands of dollars.

A group of at least three burglars smashed into Sam's Antique Oriental Rugs on Forest Lane Sunday morning, breaking out the glass front door.

The bandits wore covers over their faces as they carted off 16 Persian rugs. Store owner Sam Laleh said the carpets were worth more than $40,000. .

Magazine Review: The Glory Days of the American Auto

The American automotive industry has a clouded future, but a very bright past. That glorious history is evident in several magazines that have just arrived in the MagSampler.com newsstand. We carry three titles from Auto Round-Up Publications in Jane Lew, West Virginia (be careful, this can get confusing): the biweekly Auto Round-Up Magazine and its companion monthlies, Truck Round-Up Magazine and Auto/Truck Round-Up Monthly. We'll get to the fourth magazine, Antique Automobile, a little later. All three Round-Up magazines use newsprint stock. They are filled with ads for cars, trucks, motorcycles and a great miscellany of automotive paraphernalia. These are national magazines, so the ads are not for people looking for an old Honda Civic to use to drive to the train station every morning. The cars being offered (and being sought) are classics, antiques, muscle cars and street rods, or at least the shells that can be turned into something very special.

Letters: Home Depot not as good as local

I would like to encourage my fellow citizens to think carefully about the supposed benefits of big-box stores, such as the soon-to-open Home Depot. It's true that these stores can sometimes offer slightly lower prices on some items. However, there are many hidden costs associated with these big-box stores.Perhaps the most obvious hidden cost is the lack of expert assistance at big-box stores. At locally owned stores such as Robnett's Hardware, Spaeth Lumber and Home Center, Searing Electrical and Plumbing, Stover Evey and Jackson, just to name a few, one can get great information on various products from experienced employees, some of whom are the actual owners of the business!

Another hidden cost of big-box stores is loss of full-time jobs. Have you ever noticed that most employees (not all) of big-box stores only work part time, with few or no benefits? Ask around at the locally owned stores and you will find that most employees work full time and enjoy benefits such as health insurance.
