| Collectibles becoming the new kiddie-land
Sure, adults have infiltrated the collecting ranks in serious numbers over the past quarter-century, but cards remain an inherently youth-driven enterprise. Why else would companies like Topps and Upper Deck be so concerned about their products' attraction among the kiddie corps?Let's face it, guys like me aren't in their long-range marketing plans. Of course, they won't turn the Boomers away over the short term. Hey, it's just smart business. But a strange twist has occurred in recent years. Suddenly, the kids aren't only collectors, they're also the ones being collected.I'm not talking about the folks depicted on general-issue rookie cards. Those are big-dollar-earning pros, even if some of them aren't old enough to shave.I refer instead to those athletes who are barely old enough to date. This came to mind after I received an e-mail from Topps that talked about its multiyear sponsorship agreement with MSL Sports, which serves as host for the East Meets West All-American Game.
Georgetown sets eyes on audit, streetscape
GEORGETOWN - Georgetown's annual audit and a proposal to purchase antique-style streetlights for the downtown streetscape improvements are on the agenda for Thursday's meeting of Georgetown City Council. The annual audit will be summarized and the numbers given to Georgetown City Council for information purposes, said Stacy Moree, with the accounting firm of Harper, Poston and Moree. The city has won certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting for the past several years, she said. The city has submitted the paperwork to receive the same award this year, Moree said. "That means that their actual financial report conforms to standards set by the Government Finance Officers Association for presentation and disclosure," Moree said.
Inn owner finds niche offering comfort, comfort food
BURGIN - Dot Dunn was sitting in a chiropractor's office reading a newspaper five years ago when she saw her future in a story on the front page. A feasibility study had determined that Herrington Lake -- a popular recreation spot -- would be a good location for a state park. "I knew everything they were talking about, and I said, 'There's no lodging down there,'" Dunn recalled. Her 40th birthday was approaching, and "I always said at the age of 40 I wanted to retire to ownership." It took more than two years of searching and negotiating to secure the right property, but in March 2004, Dunn achieved her goal. Within a few months of purchasing a house about three miles outside Burgin in rural Mercer County, Lakeview Point Bed and Breakfast was open for business.
RiverWatcher: A bolt from the sky
I would like to tell Mr. Bud Bolt of Oroville's Bolt's Antique Tool Museum, that it was not a bolt from an airplane that plummeted to earth on January 25 and stuck a ground squirrel dead! Nor was it a meteorite, although one of those celestial relics from the cosmos plunged through the ceiling of a New York home recently. Nor was it a bolt of lightning. The bolt was a red-shouldered hawk that struck an unsuspecting ground squirrel near the Feather River Nature Center. The sleepy squirrel never knew what hit it, although there was a lot of squirming and screeching in its last throes. It was a remarkable encounter and an irreversible error for the squirrel that was undoubtedly lethargic from cold weather. Normally the cautious squirrel would have spotted the bird of prey and dived into its den.
